Chapter 8-14 Discussion:

1. Clair has been give the task of healer at the castle. She must adapt her nursing skills for the time and learn what herbs and etc will cure each particular ailment that is presented to her. Do you have any home remedies that were passed down to you (cure for a cold, bee sting or what have you)? I think my kid is sick of hearing me say “rub dirt on it and get out there and play.” Just kidding. Not. Suck it Up is the norm.  Aloe is a handy one, especially for sunburn. Meat tenderizer. My mom used it on my sister when she got a jelly fish sting. We’ve also used it on spider bites and scorpion stings. Whataburger taquitos or sausage and gravy are great for a hangover.

2.  What do you think would be the biggest challenge of living in the past? (clothing, hygiene, food, etiquette or etc.)  Being a woman. I don’t conform to rigid expectations, especially ones that are limiting. I like that Claire doesn’t exactly and Jamie kind of likes it. But it would get me burned at the stake. Clothing. I would miss blue jeans and sweat pants. I always make a special note when I teach WWI. The Rosie Riviters of that generation when in the factories wearing skirts and came out wearing pants. Thank those ladies. Hallelujah!

3.  Do you have a favorite character, scene or quote so far? If so, share it with us.  Of course, I love Jamie and Claire. I love how their personalities aren’t the rule for the time. I think I’m liking Doughal for a secondary character. I love the whole lead up to the marriage…I don’t even know your name….You know I’m not a virgin…Well I guess at least one of us will know what they are doing…LOVE IT.

4.  What did you think about the addition of the blood bond in the wedding ceremony? Is this something you would do with the one you love? I enjoy seeing the blending of culture and religion. The blending of Christianity with the previous pagan beliefs. I’d do it.

5.  Are you reading along closely with the scheduled chapters or are you ahead or behind? I’m a wee bit ahead. I like to stay with the schedule, so it is easier to be in the moment when answering questions. But it goes against my nature to put down a good book and walk away. Jacinda was taunting me with her lack of will power, so I read on. And heck, there was NO WAY I could put the book down knowing there was some consummating coming in the next chapter.

  1. LOL! I am so glad that you are really enjoying Jamie and Claire!

    “I said I was a Virgin not a Monk” :)

Yeah, being a woman would be right up there with my biggest challenges. I would get too frustrated with people wanting me to be all prim and proper and assuming I was a twittering idiot (though I technically am now, those words have a completely different meaning with the advent of technology lol). I would want to say “Yes I’m female, and YES I have a brain! GET OVER IT!” lol

  3. Love that someone else said being a woman, Equality is a big issue with me. Great answers. Thanks!

  4. Wow – you have some awesome home remedies. I laughed aloud at the meat tenderizer. And I agree about the lead-up to the marriage…my favorite scene in the whole series! I had to cheat and read Ch. 15 because I remembered how much I liked that scene. :)

  5. Yeah, I’m liking Jamie and Claire a bit more after chapter 15…but because that chapter isn’t covered in these questions…I guess it’ll have to wait until next week. :)

  6. Ahh the “Reckon one of us should know what they’re doing” was AMAZING, I died a little. Also the “kilt dangling” comments via Twitter totally got me and I read ahead as well. Also I would totally be right up on the stake with you, well behaved woman I am not.

  7. If only we had Whataburgers in my neck of the woods.

I loved the whole wedding shenanigans :)

My answers to every question suck because of my reading ahead…and I’m happy to be a horrible influence :) I’ve done something right in this world.

  8. LMAO! Whataburger for hangovers FTW!!! Though, I usually go for Jack in the Box when needed. And I’d totally be burned at the stake next to you, lol.

I loved all of chapter 14! All the parts your described! Also, don’t worry about reading ahead. I couldn’t put this book down the first time I read it either. :)

  9. This is the first time I’ve done a read along and I’m really scared that once I get further in the book, I won’t be able to stop! But I’m going to try my hardest. Yes, women’s roles and clothing would be a problem for me as well.

    • Glad you joined us. I love read-a-longs. I always have that problem. It’s a good problem to have. Sometimes I’m patient and sometimes I’m not. Don’t worry about it & enjoy a great book & discussion.

  10. I basically just love everything you said for #3. The NAME. SIGH SIGH SIGH.

  12. Hahaha, I love that you have a hangover cure suggestion. But I also love that you’re very ‘suck it up’, I agree with that 100%. I like Dougal as a secondary character as well, and as much as I actually do like the occasional skirt, I can’t help but agree. I love my jeans and sweats.
