Music Monday: Hammered

Kevin made many music worthy references as usual in this installment of The Iron Druid Chronicles. But the one that begged to be highlighted was on movie soundtrack composers. I’ve always been a big fan of John Williams, but Oberon’s obvious favoring of Danny Elfman for theme music made me want to do a little research.

[Leif] “I destroy them.”

Oberon spoke up. <Now, see, you can’t just drop a line like that without a little something extra. He should get Danny Elfman to compose a chilling soundtrack especially for him, so that when he says macho stuff he can play it on one of those personal recorders and give the moment its proper melodrama. Or at least he could give us a “Mwah-ha-ha-ha!”>…

“Say no more,” Leif interrupted. “I understand. I will simply have to kill them all myself.”

<There he goes again. I’m telling you, Danny Elfman would love to get hold of those lines.>

[Atticus] Not John Williams?

<If you’ve got some hopelessly overmatched heroes fighting evil and some Imperial types marching, John Williams is your guy. You need a song to make people reach for a box of Kleenex, talk to Randy Newman. But if you want creepy atmospherics and spine-shivering chords to back up your casual death threats, you gotta bring in Danny Elfman.>

As you can read, this warranted a little research into the spine-shivering skills of Danny Elfman. Which soundtrack do you think might work for Leif and his bold declarations of destruction? The compilation below was posted in 2008, so it is missing some of his more recent work.

  1. I love Danny Elfman but I wouldn’t even begin to know how he comes up with his brilliant compositions! He has such a wide variety of scores that range from the kiddos to very adult in nature. He is just FREAKING BRILLIANT!

    • I was totally a John Williams uber fan. Danny Elfman came up when I was downloading music from Willy Wonka for a project my kid had.

Love that Hearne is always pushing my geek-hood.

  2. See, I haven’t started the video yet but every time someone says Danny Elfman, I think “Dead Man’s Party” from Weird Science. I just loved the song (I grew up in the 80’s)!! The other thing I think of, Johnny Depp + Tim Burton. All three go together, like bread, PB & J.

Okay, now I’ll got check out the video and be surprised :)
