The stakes have never been higher for the young Blue Bloods of Manhattan. After their brief yet beautiful bonding ceremony in Italy, Schuyler Van Alen and Jack Force depart for Egypt, desperate to find the elusive Gate of Promise before Jack must face his twin, Mimi, for a blood trial. A blood trial that only one of them can survive. But everything Schuyler thought she knew about the gate turns out to be a lie, and they soon find themselves ensnared in a deadly battle against the demon-born. Schuyler and Jack take up arms, only to realize that there is a much graver threat simmering in the Kingdom of the Dead.
Meanwhile, determined to save the only vampire she still loves, Mimi has followed Kingsley Martin into Hell. With the help of her new human Conduit, Oliver Hazard-Perry, Mimi makes a bargain with the Queen of the Dead that she may soon regret. When the time comes to choose between love and revenge, both Mimi and Oliver will learn the true meaning of sacrifice.
confronted by danger, betrayal, and loss at every turn, the Blue Bloods must find the will to fight – and love – another day. (Source: Goodreads)
If you haven’t already started this series, I recommend you wait till the final book is out. It has been 6 months since I read the preceding books and it took me a little while to find my way back into rich story of vampires, fallen angels and recycled lives. And it is a great complex story carefully crafted by Cruz. While reading this book, it continued to amaze me how she intertwines multiple points-of-views and stories while building to unlock the mystery of this series.
Lost in Time takes us to Cairo where Schuyler and Jack are trying to unlock the Van Alen Legacy that might save the vampires we love. Jack and Mimi are also in Cairo traveling deep into Hell to bring her lost love Kingsley, who sacrificed himself in Misguided Angel.
The overarching theme of this book is love. Following your heart and being with your true love, despite what is written in the cards. Jack and Schuyler are now bonded and their time together is so tender and loving. Mimi decides that she isn’t going to sit around and pine for Jack who walked out on their bonding ceremony. She is pissed and beyond that he has abandoned her to lead the Coven alone. Of course no girl likes rejection, but her heart does not belong to him. She decides to fight, so down into Hell to get back the one man who claims her heart. Their time together is fierce and passionate, just like they are.
We get a bonus love story. The story of Allegra, Schuyler’s mom, and Ben, her human familiar. We know that Allegra had forsaken her duty to the Coven. She abandoned Charles. She gave birth to a half-blood and went into a coma, but we didn’t know the story. We received the first half of that story. How Allegra fell in love with Ben. And we get a peek into why Charles doesn’t command Allegra’s heart any longer after so many lives together.
All three of these love stories unravel threads that are definitely culminating in some real answers to be revealed to us in The Gates of Paradise…I hope. Cruz has me anxiously awaiting its release.
When the key to the future really is buried in the past.
