Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.
Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.
In her exquisitely written fantasy debut, Rachel Hartman creates a rich, complex, and utterly original world. Seraphina’s tortuous journey to self-acceptance is one readers will remember long after they’ve turned the final page. (Source: Goodreads)
Dragons and the cover had me thinking this was a middle grade focus, so it wasn’t high on my list to read. My library had the audiobook and I couldn’t pass it up. OMG! I am so glad that I checked it out. This is a fabulous fantasy. I think the lovers of Cashore’s Graceling realms will like as much as I did. BUT I highly recommend the audiobook.
Mandy’s voice perfectly painted Seraphina. It was melodic and I had to be careful not to be whisked away in her thoughts and actions. She also did a great job with all the secondary characters. I loved and cared about each and every one. She made the world feel ancient and established, like there is no way that you would doubt it existed just as Rachel painted it.
Seraphina has to hide her true self. She is half dragon, half human. She is forbidden and an abomination to both species. But you will instantly fall in love with her and her two worlds. She is smart and inciteful. This gets her on the radar of the Prince Lucian. Their relationship starts over policy then slowly builds as they strive to bring the two worlds into equilibrium and peace again.
Palace Intrigue, love and dragons…the perfect break from reality.
